Children's Programs

Catholic Family and Community Services offers a range of children's programs, some of which are held in our centres, and some in community settings. Please contact our services for information on program settings.

Children First

Children First is an educative peer support program for children aged five to 15 years who are adjusting to family life after the separation or divorce of their parents. Working in small groups with a trained facilitator the program provides a variety of creative activities for children to enable them to explore the following themes:

  • Changes to their family situation
  • Managing their feelings
  • Constructive expression of feelings

Children First also provides a support group for parents.

Domestic and Family Violence

We provide a range of services to assist children who have experienced domestic and/or family violence.

 

I CAN Children

I Can Children is a therapeutic group program held in schools for shy, anxious children six to eight years of age.

  • Friendship skills
  • Resilience skills
  • A positive self-image and demonstrated self-confidence

Kid's Business, Everyone's Business

Kid's Business, Everyone's Business is a therapeutic program for children in mid-primary school whose anti-social behaviour places them at risk of imminent suspension. The program is held at the host school, which nominates children who may benefit from the program, and addresses:

  • Acceptable behaviour
  • Living with rules
  • Respect for self and others
  • Recognising and managing feelings
  • Tantrum taming and keeping cool
  • Affirming self-worth

This program provides support and assistance to parents in relation to their children attending the program.

Supporting Children after Separation

The program helps children and young people under 18 in situations where their parents have separated. The program provides:

  • One-to-one counselling
  • Support sessions for brothers and sisters
  • Group-based sessions
  • Assistance and support in sharing concerns, thoughts and feelings with parents
  • Provision of information on separation and other places to go for help or advice

Eligibility

  • Any child or young person under the age of 18 whose parents have separated can use this program.
  • Other family members, i.e. parents, grandparents or carers, who might need support, are referred to services for adults in separated family situations
