Community Development

Catholic Family and Community Services facilitates programs in the community that assist in building responses to local and community needs.

Cannon Hill Family Support Centre

The centre supports the local community through:

  • Emergency relief
  • Counselling
  • Support and play groups
  • Thrift shop

Indigenous Community Projects

A project worker co-ordinates and facilitates appropriate responses and strategies to address issues identified in consultation with the Indigenous community in the metropolitan area. Two active groups facilitated by the project worker within the community are:

  • Grandparent Support Group which meets quarterly in a relaxed barbecue setting
  • Murri Women's Yarning Group, which meets weekly to learn craft, knitting and sewing, and to swap yarns and support each other

Care and Concern Community Outreach

Parish-based volunteer groups serve their local community by responding to the needs of people in neighbourly practical ways including:

  • Visiting
  • Emergency home help
  • Transport to shops or appointments
  • Handyman service
  • Supporting pregnant women and new mothers

Walking with Love

Walking with LoveLink will take you to an external website offers pregnant women and new mothers practical support through:

  • Friendship
  • Transportation for medical care
  • Housing, food, material and baby needs
  • Ongoing support after the baby is born

South Burnett Community Development Program

In the South Burnett region, northwest of Brisbane, the South Burnett Community Development Program provides a range of support services to rural communities including:

  • South Burnett Women's Service supporting women who have been sexually abused
  • Community Aged Care
  • Home and Community Care
  • Veterans Home Care
  • Mental health support through Responsive Connections
  • Emergency relief

Emergency Relief

The Emergency Relief Program assists individuals and families who are experiencing a crisis and are having difficulty paying for essential items. Assistance will only be provided following an appointment and successful assessment. The program not only assists people experiencing a crisis but also develops strategies to help people assist themselves.

Items considered for emergency relief include:

  • Food vouchers and/or parcels
  • Private rental
  • Utilities
  • Advocacy to power companies on behalf of the client for renegotiation of their accounts
  • Medical prescription
  • Telephone (maximum $50/annum)
  • School expenses
  • Other expenses will be considered on a case-by-case assessment

Items NOT covered by emergency relief include:

  • Cable TV
  • Internet
  • Car registration
  • Public/social housing

Note: There are local variations on what items are covered based on the service. Please contact your local service for more details.
