Domestic and Family Violence Support

Centacare Catholic Family and Community Services offers a range of domestic and family violence support services for:

Counselling (Women/Children/Men)

Counselling is a confidential interpersonal relationship that aims to assist people to develop self-understanding, to explore and resolve their issues of concern and to make changes in their lives.

Eligibility

  • Women and children who have been affected by abuse/violence within intimate and family relationships
  • Men who have used physical, emotional or psychological abuse/violence in their intimate and/or family relationships

Women' Services

Living without Domestic Violence

A group counselling and support program for women who have experienced abuse/violence in their relationships. The program offers a safe space for women in which to explore the impact of violence and abuse in their lives and to learn ways of developing non-violent, respectful relationships. Topics include:

  • Understanding the nature of abuse/violence
  • Understanding patterns in abusive/violent relationships
  • Exploring emotions and healing from the effects of abusive/violent relationships
  • Impact of abuse/vioelnce on children and how to support them
  • Self-care and self-esteem
  • Effective communication, risks and benefits
  • Future relationships
  • Safety issues

Women on the Move

Personal development workshops for women affected by unhealthy relationships. The workshops comprises nine, three-hour sessions, which are open and ongoing. Topics include:

  • Discovering self
  • Healthy relationships
  • Understanding and transforming personal feelings
  • Managing stress
  • Healthy boundaries
  • Learning good communication tools
  • Self-care, nurture and support

The service provides support, information and referral for women attending Domestic Violence Court

Domestic Violence Assistance Program

The program assists women with:

  • Preparation of applications for protection orders
  • Information about agencies/solicitors where women can go for help
  • Court support and being safe at court
  • What to do when orders are breached

South Burnett Women's Service

South Burnett Women's Service provides support for women aged 15 and over who have experienced childhood or adult sexual abuse. Experienced staff members, including a multicultural support worker, have undergone special training to deal with these sensitive issues. All clients can expect their personal details to be handled with the utmost discretion and in accordance with the legal requirements of the Privacy Act. Services offered:

  • One-to-one support
  • Court support
  • Referral to counselling
  • Advocacy and information
  • Assistance with rape, domestic violence or relationship issues

Faxback

Assisted referrals by the Queensland Police Service to support services for women following domestic violence incidents. Women referred under Faxback are provided with information, referral and support to appropriate counselling services.

Participation In Prosperity Program

The program assists and supports women toward employment, who have experienced any of the following:

  • Family breakdown
  • Domestic and/or family violence
  • Community and social isolation
  • Living in jobless households with children
  • Financial hardship
  • Unemployment
  • A gap in educational and job skills development

To achieve its aims the program offers the following range of activities:

  • Personal development
  • Financial literacy
  • Family and relationship counselling
  • Engaging with local community resources
  • Accessing peer support groups
  • Education and training
  • Assist with access to education, skills development and employment opportunities

Safety Upgrades

The aim of this program is for women and children to remain in their own homes where there is a Domestic Violence Order with an Ouster condition.

Men's Services

Men and Family Relationships

The service assists men and their family members to develop and maintain positive family relationships and offers the following range of activities which focus on family relationships:

  • Counselling for men and their family members
  • Groups and courses for men including supportive activities for men
  • Community awareness of the contribution men make to families
  • Education seminars

Eligibility

This service has been designed specifically to assist men and their families.

Changing Gears

A group counselling and support program for men who have engaged in abuse and/or violence in their intimate or family relationships. The program assists men to stop engaging in abuse and violence and to develop and maintain non-violent and respectful relationships. Topics include:

  • Understanding domestic violence and the use of power and control in relationships
  • Understanding attitudes, thoughts and feelings
  • Time-out strategy
  • Understanding and respecting boundaries
  • Understanding thoughts and emotions
  • Impact and consequences of abusive behaviour on families
  • Developing constructive communication
  • Understanding the cycle and processes of abuse/violence
  • Being accountable for actions
  • Maintaining the change process to establish and maintain respectful, caring and non-violent relationships

 Fees

16 x two-hour group sessions; $25 per session ($100 per four-week block paid in advance.

(SCOPE) Sunshine Coast Outreach, Prevention and Education

SCOPELink will take you to an external website is a regional service established to reduce the occurrence and impact of domestic and family violence from Caloundra to Gympie and the Hinterland. Services include:

  • Outreach counselling, information and referral
  • Domestic and family violence court support
  • Community education and awareness
  • Counselling for adults and children
  • Women on the Move — group work for women affected by domestic and family violence

Eligibility

  • Women and children who are experiencing domestic violence.
