Murri Ministry is a team of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people who seek to respond to Pope John Paul's 1986 Alice Springs call "to express the living word of Jesus in ways that speaks to (their) Aboriginal minds and hearts". Murri Ministry recognises John Paul's claim that "the Church in Australia will not be fully the Church that Jesus wants her to be until you have made your contribution to her life and until that contribution has been joyfully received by others".
Murri Ministry provides pastoral and spiritual assistance, consistent with Aboriginal culture, tradition and insights within the community. Murri Ministry is also involved in community liaison work which included community / home visits and referrals. Other activities include awareness raising, empowering local communities, sacramental preparations, taking part in Murri celebrations and working towards reconciliation.
Murri Ministry cares for youth in promoting leadership skills, discovery of cultural identity and enhancing self esteem.
Murri Ministry Logo - artwork by Delores McDonald
The design is formed in a circle which symbolically represents a never ending link. The symmetry and equal proportions of the figures depicts an unbroken chain of people linking hands. The black and white represents indigenous and non-indigenous, sharing knowledge and recognising their culture and spiritual beliefs.
In the centre of the design a configuration of boomerangs forms the shape of the cross. The cross represents the binding of Christian cultures and the boomerangs, Aboriginal spirituality.
