About Disability Respite

Centacare Community Support Services (CSS) receives a range of government funding to deliver services to the person with a disability, aged from 0 to 60. Funding from Disability Services Queensland, however, is directed primarily at the consumer aged 25 or below.

Services aim to support both the person with a disability and his/her carer, and to strengthen the capacity of families to continue to provide care. The overall aim is to prevent inappropriate or premature admission to residential care.

The primary target group is the consumer with a disability that may be classified as

• Physical
• Intellectual
• Sensory
• Mental health issue
• Challenging behaviour or
• a combination of the above

Strategies are developed to maintain and increase the network of relationships around each person, and to provide a safe and supportive environment for both the individual and his/her family.

A range of short-term respite options are offered, in a variety of formats including:

• In home respite
• Overnight respite
• Emergency respite
• Day centre programs
• Vacation care
• Camps
• Community access
• Family support
• Social support
• Lifestyle support
